Philly Cheese Steak Even Your Kids Will Love!

Advertisements

Who doesn’t love steak? And cheese? Being from Wisconsin, I therefore have a deep love for both. The other day our family was doing some work in the basement, finishing the drywall and mud in the boys’ bedrooms and this momma didn’t want to cook so we ordered pizza. One was a Philly Cheese Steak with ranch sauce, and it was amazing. Here is a serious shout-out to Fox’s Pizza Den in Wrightstown!!! You guys, this pizza is legit delicious. Leftover steak pizza for breakfast is my new favorite.

This week during meal prep, Tyler and the boys wanted to have Philly Cheese Steaks for dinner. These are super easy! I did a few modifications by adding thinly sliced red pepper while caramelizing the onions and they did not disappoint! As I have never been to the East Coast or had a famous Philly Cheese Steak, I went about trying to make one that our kids would love to eat.

National Cheese Steak Day

I heard it on the radio this morning that March 24 is National Cheese Steak Day. When I set out to write this blog, I had NO idea: “Every March 24 America pays tribute to one of the all-time classic sandwiches — the cheesesteak. Much like national liberty itself, the cheesesteak is elegant, necessary, pure, and was born in Philadelphia. The cheesesteak rose from humble beginnings in South Philly to the cultural icon it is today: safely secure in the sandwich hall of fame.” Read more about it HERE

What to use

All in, this recipe took an hour from start to finish with only thirty minutes of prep and active cooking time. You can choose any rolls your family will love. For this recipe I used pre-cut club rolls. Who has extra time to cut their own rolls, am I right?! For the steak our grocery store had Ribeye. Before cooking slice, them really thin after being frozen for thirty minutes. Freezing the steak before you cut it helps to make it easier to slice and also it fries up better in the pan, just make sure you do not freeze them too long! Set a timer for thirty minutes or less so you do not forget them in the freezer.

Cost to make Philly Cheese Steaks

Ribeye Steak $12.30 ($7.99 per pound)
2 packs Deli Club Rolls $3.38
2 packs sliced cheese $3.58
1 large onion $0.50
1 red Pepper $0,89
Total Cost for this recipe was $20.65.

This cost was for 12 Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches for a total of $1.72 each.
Philly Cheese Steaks would be awesome for a party or for a group meal as it can be made ahead of time and served on the rolls when the meal starts. For example, try this recipe the next time you have a cookout or friends over for a game? Any game really. Soccer, golf, football, game night, anything really. Football starts soon! Steak and football go great together, just saying.

Philly Cheese Steak Recipe

Ingredients

1 yellow onion
1 red pepper
1.5-2 pounds Ribeye steak
Salt
Pepper
Garlic Powder
Deli Club Rolls
2 Tbsp butter
1 Tbsp oil

Directions

1. Place the Ribeye steak onto a plate, then into the freezer for 30 to 60-minutes to be easier to slice. Just remember to set a timer so you do not forget them! Yes, that is applesauce in our freezer. As there was a shortage of canning lids this was the only option to keep it fresh. Stay tuned for a blog on how to make freezer applesauce!

2. On a cutting board, cut the end of one side of an onion, then cut the onion in half through the opposite end. Peel off the outside layer and then thinly slice onion and place in a bowl. Set aside to be cooked later.

3. On a cutting board, cut the top of a pepper off, remove the seeds and then thinly slice the pepper into long strips. Place the sliced peppers in the bowl with the onions.

4. Heat 2 Tablespoons butter in a large skillet on medium-high heat, making sure the pan is large enough for the steak and the peppers and onion to be in at once.

5. Dump onions and peppers into hot skillet with melted butter and cook until soft, stirring often.
This could take upwards of thirty minutes depending on your desired tenderness.

6. Place the cooked onions and peppers in a bowl and then set aside.

7. Remove the steak from freezer and then slice as thin as possible on a cutting board.
For this recipe cut the steak 1/4 inch thick as any thicker takes longer to cook. Making them all the same thickness helps with consistency through the recipe.

8. Heat a large skillet to high and then add 1 Tablespoon oil.

9. Place sliced steak into hot skillet and stir until browned roughly around 2 to 3-minutes.
You will want the steak tender and not over cooked so keep watching them, so they do not burn!

10. Warm a griddle and then butter the insides of the rolls. This step is so much easier when the rolls are already cut.

11. Sprinkle garlic powder over the buttered side of the rolls and then toast on the skillet. This could also be done in the oven for a few minutes on a baking sheet on broil. Just remember to watch the rolls with hawkeyed precision so they do not succumb to the broiler of burnness.

12. Replace the cooked onions and peppers to the steak, season with salt and pepper and then stir to combine.

13. Serve over toasted hot rolls with your choice of cheese. For example, this meal we used swiss, pepper-jack and Colby. You can scoop the meat mixture right onto the bun and place cheese on top or place the cheese on the toasted but and scoop meat on top of the cheese. Either way it is melty steaky goodness that everyone will love.
Enjoy!

    1. Monica's Scratch Kitchen – I have not always had the skills to cook and bake from scratch. As a young wife, I bought every meal frozen or boxed and presented it to my husband with a flourish, believing myself a decadent cook. As our budget shrunk, and our family grew, I looked for ways to stretch our money to nourish our kids with the best for their hungry appetites. Hoping to find recipes and meals that they would love to eat. Through the last 5 years, I have learned so many cooking and baking lessons, and experienced many wins and failures. Come along with me on this journey as I share my recipes that work, how to make them on the cheap, and my tips and tricks to get my kids to eat homemade deliciousness! I will also share updates to our house that we have done in the last year since our move. With one income, we do most of the work ourselves and with amazing family and friends to help out, cutting costs but keeping style and money in the bank! I am a wife and mother of 3 boys and 1 princess. When I was a kid, I remember being asked what I wanted to be or do when I grew up. My response was, "a mom", and I am proud to grow up and be a mom to 4 amazing kids! Samuel is 11, Matthew is 8, Levi is 4, and Elliana is almost 2. We have been blessed to have kids who love to explore foods, to try new recipes, and enjoy helping us around the house. With 4 kids, you better believe they help clean! My husband Tyler and I have been married almost 13 years. We love our kids, we love outdoors, camping, canoeing, grilling, watching movies, and just hanging out making memories. A few years ago I gifted Tyler with his own "menu" book, where we write meals and foods we have loved to eat. Weekly our family decides what our meals will be and I make up a grocery list with what we need. It literally is my favorite chore! I love to shop, so shopping for food on a budget is my biggest win! Thank you BIlly!!! I appreciate your kind words 🙂

  4. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between user friendliness and visual appearance. I must say that you’ve done a excellent job with this. Additionally, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Safari. Superb Blog!
