Crab Rangoon Pizza

If there was one food to have the rest of my life, that food would be pizza. You can make pizza savory, sweet, spicy, cauliflower crust, vegetarian, or even gluten free. I have made pizza dough with wheat flour, tested to see if my crust can then be frozen and experimented how long to let the crust rest for ultimate fluffiness. For dinner I made an amazing discovery, Crab Rangoon Pizza. It is the epitome of two of my favorite meals. Even our four kids LOVED this pizza.

Start with a good pizza dough

Pizza dough is one recipe that I feel has been perfected. With a few simple ingredients you can have three homemade doughs that can be customizable to your likes. Do you like chicken, alfredo, marinara, BBQ, sausage, or Italian sausage? You can literally make pizza into any flavor and kind that you want. The base of pizza is its dough. Once you have found a dough recipe that you and your family like, it is really easy to make and do often. Using my KitchenAid mixer, I was able to then get a recipe for pizza dough that is perfect.

I think that is why I could eat it if it was my only meal ever. This recipe is enough for three pizza crusts and two crab Rangoon pizzas. Blending the two meals together was Tyler’s idea. A coworker mentioned Crab Rangoon pizza they had at a restaurant, and we went about making it from scratch.

Cost Breakdown for This Recipe

Another factor to consider with pizza is the cost. A good frozen pizza at the grocery store can cost upwards of $9, while the cheapest is closer to $3. Now, these have a huge range for many reasons, is it gluten free, what kind of cheese and sauce is used and how many ingredients does it have? All of these can make the cost of a pizza small or incredibly expensive.

If you were to order a pizza, you would look at spending $10-$30 a pizza depending on where you order. With our family of six with one income, we cannot afford to spend half our weekly food budget on pizza once. Instead of ordering pizza, or buying pizza, we found a cost-effective way to still have restaurant style pizza at a fraction of the cost. Below is the cost breakdown for making two Crab Rangoon Pizzas.
Flour $0.67
Yeast $0.05
Sugar $0.20
Salt $0.05
Oil $0.06
Crab $2.65
Ketchup $0.02
Cream Cheese $1.09
Garlic clove $0.06
Green Onion $0.25
Sesame Oil $0.10
Worcestershire sauce $0.02
White sugar $0.20
Vinegar $0.20
Soy Sauce $0.18

Total Cost $5.80 for two Crab Rangoon Pizzas! That is $2.90 for each pizza. Other than the delicious factor, the amazingly inexpensive cost of making pizza from scratch is one of my favorite things. To feed our family of six, homemade from scratch pizza is the best cost for our money.

Directions for Crab Rangoon Pizza

1. Add half of the crab, 4-ounce cream cheese, 1 garlic clove, 1 green onion, 1 1/2 tsp sesame oil and 1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce in a Food Processor bowl and blend until smooth. My mother-in-law Christina gifted me this Food Processor for my birthday this year! I have made Crab Rangoon filling many times, but this honestly was the BEST! It was creamy, blended perfectly and was a smooth texture. Thanks Chris!

2. When pizza dough has rested, divide it into three even sections. To divide it, I have found it is easiest to use a large knife or a pizza cutter and divide it into three even amounts. If you are using a metal baking sheet, spray it with a non-stick spray before spreading the dough into the crust shape.
3. On a baking sheet, spread the one dough ball into a 12-inch circle, and using a spoon add dollops of cream cheese crab mixture onto the pizza dough, or spread it all over. With one pizza I spread the cream cheese mixture out evenly and the second I used a spoon to place chunks of the mixture on the crust.

4. Cut the remaining crab into small pieces and spread them out on the top of the crust.

5. With the remaining cream cheese, add it in small chunks around the pizza dough.

Sweet and Sour Sauce Directions

To make this sauce, you just add all of the ingredients needed in a sauce pan and cook it until it thickens. The corn starch is the thickener for this recipe and works very well at keeping the sauce smooth. By adding the corn starch to the liquids while they are still cool, the starch blends and does not clump up. When corn starch is added to warm liquids it can get clumpy. For this sauce, I added a dash of red pepper flakes to give it a little bit of a spicy kick. Just a pinch will do if you want to add it, or you can add more for a spicier sauce.

I have not always had the skills to cook and bake from scratch. As a young wife, I bought every meal frozen or boxed and presented it to my husband with a flourish, believing myself a decadent cook. As our budget shrunk, and our family grew, I looked for ways to stretch our money to nourish our kids with the best for their hungry appetites. Hoping to find recipes and meals that they would love to eat. Through the last 5 years, I have learned so many cooking and baking lessons, and experienced many wins and failures. Come along with me on this journey as I share my recipes that work, how to make them on the cheap, and my tips and tricks to get my kids to eat homemade deliciousness! I will also share updates to our house that we have done in the last year since our move. With one income, we do most of the work ourselves and with amazing family and friends to help out, cutting costs but keeping style and money in the bank! I am a wife and mother of 3 boys and 1 princess. When I was a kid, I remember being asked what I wanted to be or do when I grew up. My response was, "a mom", and I am proud to grow up and be a mom to 4 amazing kids! Samuel is 11, Matthew is 8, Levi is 4, and Elliana is almost 2. We have been blessed to have kids who love to explore foods, to try new recipes, and enjoy helping us around the house. With 4 kids, you better believe they help clean! My husband Tyler and I have been married almost 13 years. We love our kids, we love outdoors, camping, canoeing, grilling, watching movies, and just hanging out making memories. A few years ago I gifted Tyler with his own "menu" book, where we write meals and foods we have loved to eat. Weekly our family decides what our meals will be and I make up a grocery list with what we need. It literally is my favorite chore! I love to shop, so shopping for food on a budget is my biggest win! Thank you for taking the time and visiting my site, Subscribe so you do not miss a post! Keep coming back to hear about new recipes, updates on our home, fun times with our kids, and how to make homemade deliciousness! ~Monica
