Smores Bars

Smores are a Midwestern tradition. As spring approaches, nostalgia has taken hold and the kids and I decided that in addition to third winter, we needed a delicious dose of Smores. Instead of warmth, we are having freezing temperatures towards the end of April, having a fire on our new patio is still not an option. However, we can make a super delicious Smores Bars snack while we wait for true spring to start.

Cost breakdown for this recipe

As recipes go, this one is fairly inexpensive, as long as you know where to shop. To be frank, I buy 90% of our groceries at ALDI because they are literally half the cost.

12-oz Honey Graham Cereal $1.95
2 bags large Marshmallows $1.90
8 Tbsp Butter $0.73
1 cup chocolate chips $0.50
1 cup white chips $0.50

The total cost to make a batch of Smores Bars costs $5.58. This may seem like a large cost, but if this is a dish to pass or a fun snack, the cost is completely reasonable, especially that all of this was from ALDI.
Now, if you were to buy these ingredients name brand, it would cost $10.64. No, honest, it would cost over $10 to make this with name brand foods! That is why our family shops at ALDI…

To make a larger amount, and to spread out the marshmallows, you can add another box of Honey Graham cereal. This helps the marshmallows to spread thinner while doubling the recipe.

Why this recipe works

Sweet and salty. Is there anything more delicious? Add to that a nice and sticky melted marshmallow, and you have a dessert snack that wins everyone over.

Recently we were at my nephews first birthday party and my sister-in-law made a bar similar to these. She however, did have the mini marshmallows on hers and it was adorable. Unfortunately, I was unable to enjoy this treat.

With an almond allergy, there needs to be extra caution with what I consume. Chocolate is difficult as most say it contains “Tree Nuts”, which includes almond. To make this recipe I had to be 100% certain that the chocolate did not contain tree nuts or almond. In choosing the chocolate, a dark variety was a safer bet.

Smores Bars Recipe

Ingredients

8 Tbsp Butter
12 oz Honey Grahams cereal
2 bags marshmallows
1 cup chocolate chips
1 cup white chocolate chips

Directions

1. Melt butter in a large pot on the stove at medium heat, stirring occasionally so the butter does not burn.

2. While the butter melted, prepare the baking sheet by placing a piece of parchment paper or wax paper on it and then set aside. I used parchment paper because we did not have wax paper which is preferred.

3. When the butter is melted, add the marshmallows and then stir until completely melted and can take anywhere between five to ten minutes.

4. Take the pot off of the stove and then add the Honey Grahams and carefully stir completely with a spatula, making sure each cereal piece is fully coated.

5. Then, using a large spatula, pour out the Honey Grahams mixture onto the prepared baking dish. You may need to scrape the Smores out if they stay too long in the pan causing the marshmallows to cool slightly.

6. Spread out the Smores mixture over the entire pan into an even layer with a spatula. However, with clean hands this step can be easier by pressing out the ingredients with your fingers.

7. Sprinkle chocolate chips onto the Smores bars and then let them rest for 10 minutes. Additionally, you can also choose to place mini marshmallows on the Smores.

Cut the Smores with a large knife and then serve and enjoy!

I have not always had the skills to cook and bake from scratch. As a young wife, I bought every meal frozen or boxed and presented it to my husband with a flourish, believing myself a decadent cook. As our budget shrunk, and our family grew, I looked for ways to stretch our money to nourish our kids with the best for their hungry appetites. Hoping to find recipes and meals that they would love to eat. Through the last 5 years, I have learned so many cooking and baking lessons, and experienced many wins and failures. Come along with me on this journey as I share my recipes that work, how to make them on the cheap, and my tips and tricks to get my kids to eat homemade deliciousness! I will also share updates to our house that we have done in the last year since our move. With one income, we do most of the work ourselves and with amazing family and friends to help out, cutting costs but keeping style and money in the bank! I am a wife and mother of 3 boys and 1 princess. When I was a kid, I remember being asked what I wanted to be or do when I grew up. My response was, "a mom", and I am proud to grow up and be a mom to 4 amazing kids! Samuel is 11, Matthew is 8, Levi is 4, and Elliana is almost 2. We have been blessed to have kids who love to explore foods, to try new recipes, and enjoy helping us around the house. With 4 kids, you better believe they help clean! My husband Tyler and I have been married almost 13 years. We love our kids, we love outdoors, camping, canoeing, grilling, watching movies, and just hanging out making memories. A few years ago I gifted Tyler with his own "menu" book, where we write meals and foods we have loved to eat. Weekly our family decides what our meals will be and I make up a grocery list with what we need. It literally is my favorite chore! I love to shop, so shopping for food on a budget is my biggest win! Thank you for taking the time and visiting my site, Subscribe so you do not miss a post! Keep coming back to hear about new recipes, updates on our home, fun times with our kids, and how to make homemade deliciousness! ~Monica
