If you were to shop at ALDI, and purchase a pack of chocolate chunk cookies, you would get for $3.19.
This pack, however, only has 14-ounces of cookies, typically 10 cookies. To get what this recipe makes, 36, you would need to buy four packs costing a total of $12.76, making each cookie cost $0.31.
Compared to making them yourself, you would save $6.28 and then have the freshest cookies.

Comparing that to another local store, Festival Foods, a pack of their bakery chocolate chip cookies comes in a pack of 10 costing $5.79.
To get 36, you would also need to buy four packs, which brings the total to $23.16, or $0.57 per cookie.

Why make cookies from scratch?

Making recipes, even cookies, is a great way to learn a new skill.
Instead of buying a pack at the store, spend an hour in the kitchen and learn a new way to make a classic recipe. For instance, instead of cutting in the butter, try using a box grater to shred it, making the butter easier to blend into the eggs.
Or, try making your own Vanilla Extracts, and have an abundance instead of relying on the store to replenish your supply.

By making food at home, from scratch, you also learn so many skills that have somewhat been lost in our culture today. Baking, cooking, making bread, drying foods, canning and making recipes are truly vital for survival in a world that keeps pushing pre-made and packaged foods.

By making your own breads, sauces or baked goods, for instance, you can not only cut down on the cost but also learn to stretch your skills and reduce cost.

Instead of having packages of cookies, bust out a recipe book and make them for a fraction of the cost. Chances are, you will have the ingredients in your pantry or cupboard.

Buy it or make it?

Did you know that brown sugar is just granulated white sugar with molasses? Honest! If you do not have brown sugar on hand, or want to try this out, it is quite simple to do. Grab a bowl, 1 cup white sugar, and start with 1 tsp molasses and mix it well with a spoon or fork until completely combined. You may need to add more molasses.

The end result, in making your own brown sugar, is added flavor and lower cost.
4-pounds of granulated sugar is 64-ounces, and costs $2.35, making it $0.03 per ounce.

Brown sugar, bought at 64-ounces, costs $3.30, making it $0.05 per ounce.
Brown sugar costs more to buy by $0.02 per ounce. When baking, that $0.02 can add up!

For instance, if you need 1 cup for a recipe, which is 8-ounces, white sugar costs $0.24 and brown sugar would cost $0.40.
If you were to make a batch of cookies once a week, all year, you would save $8.32 on average making your own brown sugar instead of buying it.
Even buying molasses and then making your own brown sugar, you would still save money in the long run.

Directions for Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies

1. Firstly, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and set your desired baking sheet or Baking Stone aside.
I prefer using a Pampered Chef Baking Stone any time I make dessert, as it is just the BEST at keeping the food moist and without burning.

2. Secondly, in a medium bowl, sift together the flour and baking soda, then set aside.

3. Thirdly, in the bowl of a KitchenAid mixer or a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar and white sugars until blended.
Butter can be tricky to get just right into a batter, so using a box shredder can help to make short work of the process. Simply shred the butter into the mixer bowl before adding the sugars.

4. Pour in the instant pudding pack to the sugar mixture and mix on slow until combined.
Today, a vanilla pudding was used, however, feel free to use chocolate, butterscotch, sugar-free or any flavor you desire.

5. Crack the 2 eggs into a separate bowl and then add them to the mixture in the KitchenAid bowl, making sure to blend well.
Instead of using a separate bowl, using the measuring cup from the flour worked just as well, and then helped to cut down on another dish!

6. Add 1 tsp vanilla to the mixture and then stir to combine.
For this recipe, I used the recently made Homemade Vanilla Extract that has been resting for over 8 weeks. This vanilla smelled absolutely amazing. I cannot put into words just how fragrant it truly is.

7. Add the flour, half at a time, and mix to combine, then add the rest of the flour and mix well.

8. Finally, stir in the chocolate chips and stir well.
Today, the mixture was 1/3 milk chocolate, 1/3 white chocolate and 1/3 dark chocolate.

9. Measure out a Tablespoon of the Triple Chocolate Chip cookie mixture and roll it in your hands, then place it on a Baking Stone.
Place all the dough in rounded balls making sure they are 2-inches apart.
As a test, the middles were gently pressed down slightly to make the cookie dough look like hockey pucks.
The end result was great and produced a flatter cookie that was quite dense and soft.

Bake the Triple Chocolate Chip Cookies

10. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-13 minutes, or until browned.

I have not always had the skills to cook and bake from scratch. As a young wife, I bought every meal frozen or boxed and presented it to my husband with a flourish, believing myself a decadent cook. As our budget shrunk, and our family grew, I looked for ways to stretch our money to nourish our kids with the best for their hungry appetites. Hoping to find recipes and meals that they would love to eat. Through the last 5 years, I have learned so many cooking and baking lessons, and experienced many wins and failures. Come along with me on this journey as I share my recipes that work, how to make them on the cheap, and my tips and tricks to get my kids to eat homemade deliciousness! I will also share updates to our house that we have done in the last year since our move. With one income, we do most of the work ourselves and with amazing family and friends to help out, cutting costs but keeping style and money in the bank! I am a wife and mother of 3 boys and 1 princess. When I was a kid, I remember being asked what I wanted to be or do when I grew up. My response was, "a mom", and I am proud to grow up and be a mom to 4 amazing kids! Samuel is 11, Matthew is 8, Levi is 4, and Elliana is almost 2. We have been blessed to have kids who love to explore foods, to try new recipes, and enjoy helping us around the house. With 4 kids, you better believe they help clean! My husband Tyler and I have been married almost 13 years. We love our kids, we love outdoors, camping, canoeing, grilling, watching movies, and just hanging out making memories. A few years ago I gifted Tyler with his own "menu" book, where we write meals and foods we have loved to eat. Weekly our family decides what our meals will be and I make up a grocery list with what we need. It literally is my favorite chore! I love to shop, so shopping for food on a budget is my biggest win! Thank you for taking the time and visiting my site, Subscribe so you do not miss a post! Keep coming back to hear about new recipes, updates on our home, fun times with our kids, and how to make homemade deliciousness! ~Monica
