Cost breakdown for this recipe
Making Tacos, or even Walking Tacos, is not that expensive of a weeknight dinner recipe. In fact, Walking Tacos cost roughly the same as making tacos.
Below is a cost breakdown for this recipe for Walking Tacos and all of the items that were included.
3 pounds ground beef $8.91
3 Tbsp Homemade Taco Seasoning $0.40
2 green onions $0.15
Fritos $1.65
Greek yogurt OR Sour Cream $1.00
Salsa $1.00
Olives $0.55
Tomatoes $0.85
Lettuce $0.63
8-oz Shredded Cheddar Cheese $2.19
Refried Beans $0.45
1 bell pepper $1.18
The total cost for this recipe for Walking Tacos was $18.96.
Typically, we use Homemade Refried Beans, however this momma could not find a bag of pinto beans to make them at the store this week.
This recipe was enough to feed our family of 6 with quite a bit of leftovers for the next day.
All of these prices are from a local ALDI in fall of 2022.

One way to help keep costs down is to make foods from scratch. From sauces, to breads, seasonings and dips.
For this recipe for Walking Tacos, not only using Homemade Taco Seasoning, but also making Refried Beans in a Crock-Pot, you can then keep costs down. For the blog with the recipe for Refried Beans and Homemade Taco Seasoning, click the links below.
Walking Taco Recipe
Ingredients for Walking Tacos
3 pounds ground beef
3 Tbsp Homemade Taco Seasoning
2 green onions
Fritos
Greek yogurt OR Sour Cream
Salsa
Olives
Tomatoes
Lettuce
8-oz Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Refried Beans

Directions for Walking Tacos
1. Cook the beef in a large saucepan until browned.

2. Drain any grease from the cooked ground beef and then return the saucepan to the stove.

3. Add 3 Tablespoons Homemade Taco Seasoning to the ground beef.
At $0.40 a serving, you get the freshest taste for taco seasoning at a fraction of the cost from any store-bought packets.

4 Add 2-3 Tablespoons water to the saucepan and then stir the seasoning well to the cooked ground beef.

5. Continue to cook the ground beef with the seasoning for 10-15 more minutes.
This allows for the seasonings to moisten and then bloom into the beef.
6. Slice the olives and then place them in a bowl.
If you love olives, then here is a money-saving tip; buy them as a whole olive in the jar and take a minute to slice them yourself.
For example, ALDI only sells whole olives in a can, so there really is not an alternative.
At a local store, Meijer, whole black olives cost $0.48 an ounce while sliced cost $0.60 an ounce. That may not seem like a lot, but if you have Taco Tuesday once a week, then by slicing your own black olives you save $6.24 a year.
These small changes can then add up when you compound them with your entire grocery bill!

7. Slice the lettuce into thin strips and then place them into a bowl.

8. Dice the tomatoes and then place them in a bowl.
Recently, tomatoes have been so pricy!
To save on the grocery budget, and as they are going to be sliced anyway, choose the cheapest option.

9. Wash and then dice a bell pepper, if desired, and place it into a bowl.
Did you know that if you push on the stem of a bell pepper, you can then pop the entire stem off into the center?
Then it is easy to cut open the pepper and remove the seeds.

10. Cut the green onion and then place them in a bowl.
Scissors help to cut green onion quickly and so they won’t be smushed on the cutting board.

11. Shred the cheddar cheese and then add it to a bowl.
Seriously, shred your own cheddar cheese. Not only is it cheaper, but it is also not covered in anti-clumping powders.
Block Sharp Cheddar is $0.42 an ounce while Shredded Sharp Cheddar is $0.45 an ounce.

12. Open the bags of Fritos and then pour them into a bowl, placing the bowl on the table.

13. Place all of the ingredients in their bowls and then set them on the table.

14. Place the Refried Beans in a microwave safe bowl and then warm them for 3-5 minutes in the microwave.

15. To plate up the Walking Tacos, add Fritos to the bowl and then add any desired ingredients.
Finally, serve and enjoy!
