Thanksgiving is for pies

This year my cousin hosted Thanksgiving with our entire family coming to eat. My task was to bring pies and pies did I bring!

In total, two pumpkin pies, pumpkin-pecan pie, raspberry pie, pecan pie and this apple pie were made.

Cost breakdown for this recipe

Making pies is not cheap. In fact, some pies are much more expensive to make them from scratch than buying them.
For example, in winter, fruit can become highly costly and then gives a higher cost to the pie.
Below is a cost breakdown for the cost it was to make this apple pie with homemade pie crust in November 2022. Additionally, all of these costs and materials came from our local ALDI.

ingredients for pies

Apple Filling Cost:
4-6 Granny Smith Apples $3.00
1 Tbsp Butter $0.10
1/2 tsp Cinnamon $0.03
1/4 tsp Nutmeg $0.03
1/2 cup Sugar $0.15
1/2 cup Flour $0.08

Pie Crust Cost:
1 cup butter $1.64
1/2 tsp salt $0.01
2 2/3 cups flour $0.45

The total cost for this pie crust is $2.10, which makes three pie crusts.
This entire pie crust recipe was not used, only about half was used.
The cost for this apple pie was $1.05 for the crust and $3.39 for the filling making this apple pie cost $4.44.

Below is the link to a local grocery store in Wisconsin, where I live. Pick ‘n Save has a great bakery and deli selection, including this Apple Lattice Pie. Right now, December 2022, this 10-inch pie costs $11.79.
The homemade apple pie with a lattice design you too can make costs $4.44, saving you $7.35.

2. In a medium bowl, add 1/2 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and then add 1/2 tsp cinnamon and 1/4 tsp nutmeg, mixing well with a spatula.

3. Wash and then use a vegetable peeler to remove the skins off 4-6 Granny Smith apples.

4. Use an apple slicer to slice the apples, then remove any harder bits and also the core. Then slice the apples in half again and place them into the bowl with the dry ingredients.
By using an apple slicer, the slices will then be even and then will cook evenly.

5. Once the apples are sliced, peeled and placed in the bowl, mix well with the dry ingredients.

6. Pour the apple pie filling into the prepared pie crust, then slice the 1 Tbsp butter into smaller chunks and place the pieces over the apples before adding the top crust lattice.

7. With extra pie crust, make crust strips and then form a lattice pattern on the apple pie.
To do this, use a pastry cutter to slice the strips in 1-inch increments.
Lay one piece directly in the middle of the pie, then lay the second making a t.
Lay the next pieces, placing them over and under in opposites until the lattice pattern is created.
Finally, cut the ends of the strips so they just touch the edge of the crust.
Additionally, trim the edges of the crust and crimp to make it look nice.

8. Crack an egg and then mix it with a fork, using a pastry brush, brush the egg onto the pie crust.

9. Then sprinkle sugar on the top of the pie crust where the egg wash was brushed on.

10. Place the apple pie into the preheated oven and then bake for 30-35 minutes.
To save the crust from burning, use a pie crust shield for the first 10 minutes of baking, then after 10 minutes, remove the shield and continue baking the apple pie.
In hide sight, using a sheet of aluminum foil would have been the better route as the top of the lattice did become darker than desired.

Remove the apple pie when done and then let it rest to cool before slicing.
Finally, cut the pie and serve with whipped cream and enjoy!

I have not always had the skills to cook and bake from scratch. As a young wife, I bought every meal frozen or boxed and presented it to my husband with a flourish, believing myself a decadent cook. As our budget shrunk, and our family grew, I looked for ways to stretch our money to nourish our kids with the best for their hungry appetites. Hoping to find recipes and meals that they would love to eat. Through the last 5 years, I have learned so many cooking and baking lessons, and experienced many wins and failures. Come along with me on this journey as I share my recipes that work, how to make them on the cheap, and my tips and tricks to get my kids to eat homemade deliciousness! I will also share updates to our house that we have done in the last year since our move. With one income, we do most of the work ourselves and with amazing family and friends to help out, cutting costs but keeping style and money in the bank! I am a wife and mother of 3 boys and 1 princess. When I was a kid, I remember being asked what I wanted to be or do when I grew up. My response was, "a mom", and I am proud to grow up and be a mom to 4 amazing kids! Samuel is 11, Matthew is 8, Levi is 4, and Elliana is almost 2. We have been blessed to have kids who love to explore foods, to try new recipes, and enjoy helping us around the house. With 4 kids, you better believe they help clean! My husband Tyler and I have been married almost 13 years. We love our kids, we love outdoors, camping, canoeing, grilling, watching movies, and just hanging out making memories. A few years ago I gifted Tyler with his own "menu" book, where we write meals and foods we have loved to eat. Weekly our family decides what our meals will be and I make up a grocery list with what we need. It literally is my favorite chore! I love to shop, so shopping for food on a budget is my biggest win! Thank you for taking the time and visiting my site, Subscribe so you do not miss a post! Keep coming back to hear about new recipes, updates on our home, fun times with our kids, and how to make homemade deliciousness! ~Monica
