Bacon.
Deliciously crispy bacon.
There are many recipes that you can make with bacon, but the quintessential bacon recipe is a BLT. And when you add homemade mayonnaise, you can then make a delicious BLT that is perfect for lunch or dinner.

Cost breakdown for this recipe

As far as cost goes, this one is fairly inexpensive.
Our family does not go out to eat at restaurants often. As part of our budget, we are very strict with where our money goes. If you don’t tell your money where it goes every month, you will be wondering where it went.

A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” ― Dave Ramsey

Because we do not go out to eat, because let’s be real, it is quite expensive lately. Instead, I find a meal and then make it at home from scratch, keeping in mind my allergy requirements.

What am I allergic to? The list is extensive.

Oak Pollen
Dust Mites
Almond
Strawberry
Lemon
Lime
Peach
Pear
Mango
Kiwi
Pineapple
Carrot
Celery
Apple
Orange

Oh goodness, did I forget anything?

So, instead of going to a restaurant and not really being able to eat most of the food, I make the food at home.
Below is a cost breakdown of how much it would cost to make BLTs at home verses going out to eat.

2 Packages Bacon $7.98
Tomatoes $0.98
Lettuce $0.58
Bread $1.99

The total cost to make this recipe for 12 BLTs is $11.53.
Each BLT then costs $0.96.

At a nation-wide restaurant, Perkins, a BLT cost $9.49 in our area.
If we were to go out and order the same amount of BLTs, it would have cost $113.88. And that’s without tip.
Even if we would have only bought one for each person, the cost would have cost $56.94.

Recipe for BLTs

Ingredients for BLT

2 packs Bacon
2 Tomatoes
Lettuce
Bread
Mayonnaise

Directions for BLT

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Place 2 baking sheets on the countertop, then lay aluminum foil over the sheets.

3. Spray the aluminum foil with nonstick spray.

4. Open the packages of bacon and then lay the bacon pieces on the sheet in a single layer.

5. Place the baking sheets into the preheated oven and cook until the bacon is slightly crispy, around 25-30 minutes. Just make sure to watch it so the bacon doesn’t burn!

6. When done, remove the baking sheets from the oven.

7. Place 2-4 sheets of paper towel on a plate, then remove the bacon and lay it on the paper towel sheets. This will allow the grease to soak into the towels and get off the bacon.

8. In a sink colander, rinse the tomatoes and lettuce.

8. On a cutting board, slice the tomatoes and then set them on a plate.

9. Place pieces of lettuce on a plate.

10. If desired, toast the bread before assembling the BLT.

11. Spread mayonnaise on the bread, then layer bacon pieces, lettuce and tomato slices.

12. Top the BLT sandwich with an additional piece of bread and then enjoy!

In addition to BLTs, we had Creamy Garlic Parmesan Orzo Pasta. Check out that recipe below!

I have not always had the skills to cook and bake from scratch. As a young wife, I bought every meal frozen or boxed and presented it to my husband with a flourish, believing myself a decadent cook. As our budget shrunk, and our family grew, I looked for ways to stretch our money to nourish our kids with the best for their hungry appetites. Hoping to find recipes and meals that they would love to eat. Through the last 5 years, I have learned so many cooking and baking lessons, and experienced many wins and failures. Come along with me on this journey as I share my recipes that work, how to make them on the cheap, and my tips and tricks to get my kids to eat homemade deliciousness! I will also share updates to our house that we have done in the last year since our move. With one income, we do most of the work ourselves and with amazing family and friends to help out, cutting costs but keeping style and money in the bank! I am a wife and mother of 3 boys and 1 princess. When I was a kid, I remember being asked what I wanted to be or do when I grew up. My response was, "a mom", and I am proud to grow up and be a mom to 4 amazing kids! Samuel is 11, Matthew is 8, Levi is 4, and Elliana is almost 2. We have been blessed to have kids who love to explore foods, to try new recipes, and enjoy helping us around the house. With 4 kids, you better believe they help clean! My husband Tyler and I have been married almost 13 years. We love our kids, we love outdoors, camping, canoeing, grilling, watching movies, and just hanging out making memories. A few years ago I gifted Tyler with his own "menu" book, where we write meals and foods we have loved to eat. Weekly our family decides what our meals will be and I make up a grocery list with what we need. It literally is my favorite chore! I love to shop, so shopping for food on a budget is my biggest win! Thank you for taking the time and visiting my site, Subscribe so you do not miss a post! Keep coming back to hear about new recipes, updates on our home, fun times with our kids, and how to make homemade deliciousness! ~Monica
